MER – Marine Ecosystem Restoration
The PNRR Marine Ecosystem Restoration (MER) Project envisages interventions for the restoration and protection of the seabed and marine habitats, the strengthening of the national system for the observation of marine and coastal ecosystems and the mapping of coastal and marine habitats in Italian waters with the acquisition of a new oceanographic naval unit, equipped with highly technological equipment capable of probing the seabed up to 4000 m and very high resolution acoustic instrumentation.
The ItaliaMeteo Agency is joining the project through an agreement signed with ISPRA, as part of the implementation of the objectives set out under Measure M2C4, Investment 3.5 of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with reference to interventions B31 and B33, which respectively provide for:
- the operational deployment of a modeling system for marine circulation and wave motion, based on the integration of ensemble models using existing products, as well as the implementation of forecasting products for coastal areas, aimed at disseminating forecasts on institutional websites managed by meteorological agencies;
- the implementation of a national-scale sea level forecasting model, aimed at the development and operational testing of a national-scale forecasting system for sea level and sea state, to support coastal risk management.
