About us
The Meteorology and Climatology Agency ItaliaMeteo is the national meteorological service. Operating in line with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the agency enhances the efficiency and competitiveness of the Italian meteorological system. It strengthens and streamlines activities related to weather monitoring, forecasting, climate assessments, and marine meteorology in coordination with national and regional meteorological bodies.
ItaliaMeteo was established by Law 205/2017 , which also created the Meteorology and Climatology Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee provides technical and scientific oversight, defining the agency’s strategic direction. The agency’s Statute and Regulations were approved by DPCM (September 24, 2020) and DPR No. 186 (October 15, 2020).
The bodies of the Agency, as identified by the Statute, are the Director, the Executive Committee, and the Board of Auditors. The Agency is organized into four areas: operations; observation and IT infrastructure; research and development; administration, personnel, communication, and training.
The Committee is composed of thirteen experts from the sector, seven of whom are appointed by the Head of the Department of Civil Protection and various Ministries (Defense; Education, University and Research; Environment and Protection of Land and Sea; Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies; Economic Development; Cultural Heritage, Activities, and Tourism) and six representing the regions and autonomous provinces.
Among the various tasks outlined in the Statute, the Director: chairs the Executive Committee; prepares, submits for approval by the Committee, and implements the three-year activity plan; defines general guidelines and programs; establishes agreements; adopts regulations and general acts governing the Agency’s operations; enacts the Agency’s accounting and budget regulations; ensures coordination measures with directors and representatives of meteorological entities; and promotes and maintains relations with the competent bodies of the European Union.
The 2026 Budget Law (Law No. 199 of December 30, 2025) assigns the Department of Civil Protection the role of directing and supervising the Agency. The same law appoints Prefect Fabio Ciciliano as Extraordinary Commissioner.
The Committee meets at the Director’s request and defines operational regulations to ensure the efficient management of the Agency.
The Board of Auditors ensures the proper maintenance of financial records, monitors compliance with laws, statutes, and regulations, examines and audits the Agency’s budget, and periodically verifies its cash balance. Additionally, it has the authority to request information from the Director regarding the Agency’s operations and management while conducting regular financial audits to ensure transparency and accountability.
