WW3 MEDITA
Sea state forecasts (significant wave height, wave propagation direction, mean period, and peak period) for the Mediterranean basin. Hourly forecasts are provided up to +72 hours by the WW3 (WAVEWATCH III) numerical wave model, which is implemented within the operational forecasting chain managed by ItaliaMeteo and Arpae Emilia-Romagna.
‘Sea state’ refers to the description of wave properties at a given location and point in time. The map visualization displays the significant wave height, expressed in meters, and the corresponding wave propagation direction for the entire Mediterranean domain, with the option of viewing the variables described for the Italian domain only. The two options can be selected from the menu at the top left of the map. ‘Significant wave height’ is defined as the mean height of the highest one-third of waves present in a given sea area, when ordered by increasing height.
